South West, UK

£17,680 - £29,210 Per Annum DOE + Overtime + Benefits

Service Engineer Role Description:

Our client is a thriving business in the lift industry- specialising in bespoke lift installations, servicing and repairs. The Service Department currently maintain approximately 530 units and is set to continue growing.

Service Engineer Key Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out routine service and maintenance visits
  • Carrying out or assisting with repair work
  • Undertaking technical surveys
  • Out of hours call outs
  • Liaising with management on matters of Health and Safety in the field
  • Dealing with customers and members of the public

As a field-based engineer, you will regularly come into contact with both customers and members of the public who are using our client's lifts, and you will be expected to show a degree of care, respect and friendliness in your interactions with them. This is primarily a manual, field-based role but there are administrative duties- such as sending in timesheets and job reports- that are expected to be completed professionally and within the required time frame.

In addition to the regular working week this role also includes out of hours duty on a three-weekly basis. This involves taking calls from our call-centre outside of office hours and acting on any breakdowns or entrapments- potentially by  attending the call or offering advice over the phone.
Remuneration, Benefits and Progression:

The salary range for this position is between £8.50 and £14 per hour on a 40-hour, 5 day per week basis.

The Out of Hours call out fee is £80 per week while on standby, with £25 per call out attended plus normal hourly rate.

Due to the size of the company progression and promotion are not always readily available. However, there is scope for progression in this role as the department grows and more engineers are required to cope with the inevitable increase  in units. Our client aims to promote from within and with growth more opportunities to advance to the level of senior  engineer will become available.

Benefits Include:

  • 30 days paid holiday per year pro-rata, including bank holidays (up to three days mandatory holiday during Christmas shutdown)
  • Training and personal development opportunities
  • Company branded clothing (optional for office staff)
  • Workplace Pension Scheme
  • Length of Service rewards
  • Childcare support initiatives
  • Personal Financial Adversity Support
  • Company vehicle, mobile phone and tablet

Service Engineer Person Specification:

Previous education and qualifications are not key to this role though a relevant NVQ3 or equivalent would be preferred, and at least basic computer skills will be necessary. Previous experience in the lift industry, or equivalent transferable skills, are essential and an electrical/mechanical background would be beneficial.

The person who will best succeed in this role will have good communication skills, being able to liaise with customers of all descriptions- from large corporate clients to private home owners, as well as varied members of the team. This person should be confident and assertive and be able to deal with clients who may be unhappy due to lift breakdowns.

This position comes with a high degree of travel and lone working, so self-motivation, integrity, organisation and time-management skills are also important, as well as the ability to work under pressure.
